Markets are being threatened with closure.
Local Authorities are quoting 600 year old Royal Charters which 'give them authority to ban markets within a day's donkey ride of another.' None actually seem able to produce copies of these charters in today's English.
They claim this distance is equivalent to about 6.25 miles and are measuring as the crow flies. In one case Tyneside Council has to decide whether to allow a market to be set up within a donkey's ride of the market in South Shields. The distance as the donkey rides is nearer 14 miles.
Anecdotal evidence is more markets are better for the areas.

Warning XP Service Pack 3 is bad for your health!!
Unfortunately, Service Pack 3 seems to make some PCs unhappy... VERY unhappy.
After you install SP3, your PC reboots itself repeatedly without consulting you... or simply crashes.
Now, this, apparently, is only SOME PCs, not all. And your PC may well be one of the ones on which SP3 installs and works just fine.
I've installed SP3 on one of my PCs, and it is very, VERY unhappy - and so am I!!
So, I'd advise you NOT to install SP3 until the dust settles and Microsoft clears up whatever's causing the problem.
So if XP's Automatic Updates feature offers you SP3, say no for the time being... just in case.

Increase Numbers of Car Boot Days
At the moment only 14 car boot sales a year can be held on any field in Green Belt land. The organisers of
"Warrington's Favourite Car Boot"
are petitioning to allow them for 28 days. They state "We go on about recycling, please tell me what is more efficient than recycling your unwanted items than burying that in land fill sites. A good day out for people and if run properly, a safe and clean way of raising extra cash and emptying your garage."

Transfer tapes to MP3 free.
My birthday present, back in August, was an MP3 player from Amazon. It came with trial software letting me rip all my tapes to computer in WAV but only encode 20 to MP3. I've exhausted the 20 so I searched for a freebie and found a fully functional free one at Audacity
. (Most are just trials or only copy 75% of your file!). At this rate, I'll need to get myself a bigger MP3 player!
MadSally
has full details of how to transfer it all (again free!). To transfer you need a tape player, preferably mains, with a headphone socket (from a car boot sale) and a line-in on the computer + a 3.5mm stereo jack-to-jack lead. Good luck.

Buying a new computer? $15 off.
I've just transferred all my programs and files from my old one in 20 minutes using PCmover on my home network. I didn't have to find all those old cds to reinstall everything! 'PCmover is the easiest way to move all your programs, files, and settings to a new PC.' Code CJPH7Q for $15 off.
I don't recommend using the 'Easy Transfer' cable for Vista.
The best options are either to set-up a peer2peer network using a cross-over cable or use the PCmover USB2 cable, if you have USB2 on your old machine.

Save up to 40p / minute. Where companies list only 0870, 0871, 0844 and 0845 numbers which are not free, even on your mobile with its 'free' minutes SAYNOTO0870.com lists alternative landline or freephone numbers. It's free to use.

Telephone queues
- Don't tear your hair out being held in a telephone queue. Next time an electronic voice tells you to press 5 so that you can press 7 and then press 2 - don't! Just don't press anything. Wait it out. Apparently, 80% of the time you'll actually get through to a person or be put on call back, which means... less waiting!

What are RSS Feeds?
RSS feeds allow you to see when websites have added new content. You can get the latest headlines and stories in one place, as soon as they are published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from.
How do I start using feeds?
In general, the first thing you need is something called a feed reader. This is a piece of software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser, and some of which are downloadable applications. IE 7.0 has a good feed reader built in, otherwise try
